Pepper The Fox

Four Paws, One Journey: Stress-free relocation of pets to Austria

Pepper the Fox shares tips for pet relocation for internationals

Pepper knows from years of experience: Relocating to Austria isn’t just exciting for humans — furry friends, purring pals & Co. also deserve a smooth start. To make sure your new beginning doesn’t start with stress but with tail wags, Pepper has put together a list of things to keep in mind before, during, and after arriving in Austria with your pet.

And don’t worry — if it all seems a bit overwhelming, that’s exactly what we’re here for. But let’s take it one paw at a time…

Before departure: Documents, vaccinations & entry requirements

Before your journey can begin, you need to make sure your pet meets all the requirements for entering Austria:

Microchip & EU Pet Passport: A microchip is mandatory for dogs, cats, and ferrets. The EU Pet Passport contains vital information like vaccinations and ID — without it, entry isn’t possible.

Rabies vaccination: This is the most important requirement!

✔ Special rules for certain countries: Pepper’s advice: If you're coming from a non-EU country (so-called "third countries"), a rabies antibody test may be required.

Sounds complicated? It can be — but we’re happy to help!

📌 Pepper tip: Start planning early — especially for intercontinental moves!

During the journey: Crates, airline rules & customs

Travel logistics are just as important for pets as they are for people.

Travel crate: Your pet’s crate must be escape-proof, well-ventilated, and roomy enough for comfort.

Flight or car? Pepper has found that some pets travel better by car. Choose the least stressful option based on your route and pet’s needs.

Customs & border control: You may be asked for documentation upon entry — have your pet passport ready!

After arrival: Registration, housing & settling in

Welcome to Austria! Time to get cozy — but there are still a few things to take care of:

Dog registration: All dogs must be registered with the local municipality. Regulations vary by federal state — key terms: dog tax and certificate of competence.

Liability insurance: Required for registration — Pepper recommends including it in your household insurance right away.

Housing & neighbors: Not all landlords allow pets. Pepper knows what to watch out for when apartment hunting, especially in cities like Vienna, Linz, Salzburg, or Graz.

Leash and muzzle regulations: In Austria — particularly in cities — dogs must be kept on a leash and wear a muzzle in many public spaces.

  • Example Vienna: Dogs must be leashed and muzzled in public transport, elevators, and accessible buildings. In most parks, leashes are mandatory unless you're in a designated dog zone.

Dog waste etiquette: Across Austria, owners are legally required to clean up after their dogs. In cities like Vienna, Graz, and Linz, you'll find many free “Sackerl fürs Gackerl” stations — small dispensers with dog waste bags.

  • Failure to clean up can result in fines up to € 200,00 in Vienna!

Dogs in public & on public transport: Dogs are welcome in many areas of public life — but with rules:

  • Public transport: In Vienna, Linz, Graz, and Salzburg, dogs can ride trams, buses, and trains as long as they wear a muzzle and are on a leash. Small dogs in carriers are often exempt.
  • Parks & green spaces: Many parks have dog zones where pups can run free. Outside these zones, leashes are generally required.
  • Shops & restaurants: Pet access depends on the venue — many cafés and restaurants welcome well-behaved dogs, but it’s always best to ask first.

📌 Pepper tip: The “Dog’s Places” app shows dog-friendly zones, shops, and venues all over Austria.

Settling in & adjusting: Pets need time to adapt to their new surroundings. Pepper’s advice: Lots of love, a consistent routine, and a familiar toy can work wonders!
